Children & Education Career Academy

Have you ever thought about becoming a teacher? Do you enjoy working with children and their families? Help shape the future. If you would like to a have career involving children or become an elementary, preschool or special education teacher, Career & Tech's Children & Education Career Academy is the place to be! 

Located at Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, the Children & Education Career Academy is an exciting program that unites the best qualities of career and technical education and academic study with the ability to earn up to 18 college credit while still in high school. By the time you complete your studies at the Academy, you'll be well on your way to earning an associate's or bachelor's degree in education or child development. 

As an Academy student, you'll enjoy learning with peers who share your interests and talents. Through focused study, hands-on experiences and specialized academics, you'll explore the worlds of elementary, preschool and special education and child development, and have fun, too!

Your teachers will provide you with a great foundation of knowledge and a solid base for continued study at college. You'll also put classroom theory into practice by working with young children in a variety of settings, including local elementary schools, preschools and child development centers. Your academic classes - Regents math, English, social studies, science - will relate lessons to the field of education whenever possible.

Lots of students enjoy afterschool clubs, sports and community projects. Students who enroll in the full-day option of the Children & Education Career Academy return to their home schools in time to participate in such activities.

Units of study:
- Child growth and development
- Introduction to elementary and early childhood education, birth to age 8
- Expressive arts
- Guidance, discipline and observations of young children
- Parent/teacher/community involvement
- Special needs children
- Establishing & maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment
- Curriculum methods/program management
- Specialized Regents English, math, social studies, science

Career possibilities:
- Preschool director
- Child and/or family agency professional (social worker, parenting educator, etc.)
- Teacher -any level (preschool, elementary, etc.)
- Special education teacher
- Teacher assistant
- After-school program coordinator or aide
- Head Start or family day care provider
- Special needs assistant
- Speech therapist
- Child psychologist

Prerequisites:
- Academically on track to graduate on time.
- Highly recommended: Successful completion of Math Regents, Global Studies Regents and once Science Regents exam.
-Record of positive attendance and behavior.
-Current physical, TB Mantoux test, fingerprinting, child abuse clearance.
-Recommended: Child development or human development, food and nutrition, parenting, art or music.

Portfolio
Children & Education Career Academy students create a portfolio that showcases their experience and talents for presentation to career professionals and college officials.
