Medical school, nursing, speech therapy:
New Visions: Health Careers alumni take many paths

New Visions: Health Careers Class of 2001 alumnus MaryBre Mackenzie was awarded an M.D. agree at Albany Medical College's graduation ceremony on May 21, 2009. Dr. MacKenzie, who was a New Visions: Health Careers student while a senior at Shenendehowa High School, attended Union College and earned her B.S. in 2005 and M.S. in 2006. At Union, she was awarded Phi Beta Kappa for outstanding academic achievement.

At Albany Medical College, Dr. MacKenzie was awarded the R.J. Wharton Prize for demonstrating the greatest proficiency in pediatrics. She will be a resident in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis.

Happy Scherer was Dr. MacKenzie's New Visions: Health Careers teacher. Scherer reports, "MaryBre is one of seven students who are attending or have completed medical school out of the 28 students I taught in New Visions: Health Careers from 1999-2000 and 2000-2001." Other alumni have gone on to careers including nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy and many other fields. Scherer now teaches New Visions: Human Services and Special/Elementary Education.
